A conservative military watchdog says Barack Obama canArmy soldiersnot unilaterally change the 1993 law that prohibits homosexuals from serving in the military.
Elaine Donnelly, president of the Center for Military Readiness, believes there will be push to repeal the law during the first 100 days of the new administration. Even before Barack Obama's victory, Donnelly predicted that if the White House switched to Democratic control, there would be an effort in the first few months of the new administration to repeal the law that was passed by overwhelming bipartisan support in a Democratic Congress. She contends there will be serious consequences if they are able to do it.
"If that law is repealed, the new policy will be forced cohabitation with homosexuals in all military communities," Donnelly points out. "It would have a devastating effect on the volunteer force because everyone will know that if they disagree with that policy or have any problem with it at all, their motives will be questioned, promotions will be denied, their careers will be ended. The ultimate effect would be breaking the volunteer force as we know it."
Donnelly says she hopes that just like in 1993, sensible Democrats will realize just how important the military is and not go along with any effort to repeal the ban.
