SEATTLE — Authorities searched Thursday for a car with two children inside that reportedly went into the rain-swollen Green River near Auburn, south of Seattle.
Auburn police Sgt. Scott Near said a woman called 911 around 8:45 a.m. to report that her Volkswagen Beetle went off a roadway next to the river south of Seattle. She said that she managed to get out, but a 14-year-old child and 2-year-old child were still in the car when it went down river. The driver tried to rescue them, but in vain, Near told The Seattle Times.
"With how high the river is and the current, (rescuers) believe they got swept out a ways. They're trying to figure out now where that would be," Near said.
Police, firefighters and rescue workers from surrounding communities searched in the river and along the banks just north of the Auburn Golf Course.
Steady rains this week have swollen many rivers in Western Washington.
Flood warnings are in effect for Western Washington, including the Skokomish, Skykomish, Snoqualmie and Tolt rivers, where the warning for expected flooding near Carnation has been upgraded from moderate to severe. Flood watches are in effect for other rivers around Puget Sound.
The National Weather Service forecasts a second day of heavy rain in parts of Western Washington and flood warnings have been issued. More than an inch of rain fell Thursday in Seattle.
