The Bishop of New Hampshire, who gave his autobiography the title In the Eye of the Storm, has discovered that there are some perks from having such a high profile.
Mandrake can disclose that Bishop Robinson has been staying at the Dorchester this week while visiting London for an awards ceremony held by the homosexual rights organisation Stonewall.
Rooms at the Mayfair hotel cost from £395 to £15,000 per night, but the bishop has not had to dip into the proceeds of his book sales.
"We asked the Dorchester and they agreed to put him up," confirms Ben Summerskill, the chief executive of Stonewall.
"He didn't have to pay, of course. The Dorchester offer to put up international figures and did so as he does have a large international following. He was honouring his vow of poverty!"
Lily's weighty concerns
Lily Allen, who has proclaimed in the past that she felt under no pressure to lose weight, appears to have changed her mind. "I'm paranoid about my weight because of all the horrible things people have written about me," she told Mandrake at GQ magazine's 20th anniversary dinner held at the St Alban restaurant in the West End of London. Last year, it was disclosed that the 23-year-old pop singer had gone from a size 12 to a size 8 after seeing Susan Hepburn, a hypnotist, who implants subconscious messages in her patients to stop overeating.
Jacobs breaks festive tradition
Marc Jacobs, whose dresses are often cited as essential Christmas party-wear, has cancelled his own festive soirée. For the past 18 years his party has been one of the highlights of the fashion calendar, but this year's event has apparently fallen victim to the financial crisis.
Staff employed by the creative director of Louis Vuitton were told the event had been cancelled by Robert Duffy, Jacobs's business partner.
"It pains me, as this has been a Marc Jacobs tradition," Duffy said. "Hopefully it will be reinstated next year."
At last year's party, which had an Arabian nights theme, Jacobs turned up dressed as the toe of a camel. As you do.
