Persecution | Lynn Olanoff Lehighvalleylive.com www.lehighvalleylive.com Bethlehem police are investigating an arson that occurred Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church, 2344 Center St., causing minor damage to a multi-purpose room. Church Deputy Facilities Manager Becki Angione said she was conducting her usual rounds at 12:15 p.m. when she smelled smoke coming from one of the rooms on the lower level. No fire was visible when she entered the room, but the wall paint was blistered in two areas, she said.
Angione called city law enforcement authorities, who determined the fire was arson. Church officials said the fire was set between 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., Angione said. The church’s last Sunday service concluded at 11:15 a.m., she said. “We really can’t say whether it was someone who attended our church. The building is open,” she said. Angione said she hopes someone is arrested in the incident so they can be helped. City Fire Commissioner George Barkanic didn’t immediately return a call for comment.
