Homosexuality | guardian.co.uk www.guardian.co.uk Rowan Williams, the archbishop of Canterbury, attempted today to bind together the warring factions of the Church of England by appealing for both conservatives and liberals to show mutual tolerance and understanding over issues of gay equality and women bishops. He also placed the church firmly against any liberalisation of the law on assisted dying, describing the granting of a right to die as a moral mistake and an upsetting of the balance of freedoms. |

Weather Woes | NBC MSNBC www.msnbc.msn.com WASHINGTON - A blizzard battered the Mid-Atlantic region Saturday, with emergency crews struggling to keep pace with the heavy, wet snow that piled up on roadways, toppled trees and left thousands without electricity. Most people seemed to be hunkered down at home early Saturday, out of the way of road crews. In downtown Washington, a few people ventured out to walk their dogs and clear away thigh-high snow from sidewalks. Plows and a few intrepid drivers cruised the snow-covered roads — a departure from the usual weekend traffic congestion. |

Earthquakes | KIRK JOHNSON The New York Times www.nytimes.com DENVER — In the last two weeks, more than 100 mostly tiny earthquakes a day, on average, have rattled a remote area of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, putting scientists who monitor the park’s strange and volatile geology on alert. Researchers say that for now, the earthquake cluster, or swarm — the second-largest ever recorded in the park — is more a cause for curiosity than alarm. The quake zone, about 10 miles northwest of the Old Faithful geyser, has shown little indication, they said, of building toward a larger event, like a volcanic eruption of the type that last ravaged the Yellowstone region tens of thousands of years ago. |
