Washington is pressuring Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accede to its proposal to resume Israeli-Palestinian peace talks on the basis of U.S. President Barack Obama's May 19 speech.
Netanyahu's personal envoy, Isaac Molho, spent last week in Washington, where the Americans presented their proposal for resuming talks on the basis of Obama's speech. Specifically, Obama's plan calls for negotiating over borders and security first, while deferring issues such as Jerusalem and the refugees until later. It also calls for the borders to be based on the 1967 lines, with mutually agreed land swaps.

March 11, 2011 - eastern Japan: While Japan is relatively well-prepared when it comes to earthquakes, the tsunami that followed the magnitude 8.9 earthquake 130 kilometers (81 miles) east of Sendai caused extensive damage on the country's eastern seaboard. The 10-meter (33-foot) high waves that swept over Japan after the quake triggered tsunami warnings for much of the Pacific Rim.
February 27, 2010 - Concepcion, Chile: Just a few weeks after the major earthquake that devastated Haiti in January 2010, Chile was hit by a magnitude 8.8 earthquake. While the damage from the quake that struck in the early hours of a Saturday morning wasn't as extensive as in Haiti, hundreds of buildings were destroyed in the city of Concepcion and damage was also reported in the capital, Santiago. Over 700 people lost their lives.

Flooding along the Mississippi River, already swamping cities and farmland and crimping business from river barges to casinos, could cost billions.
Although economists say it's too early to tell how much damage the Mississippi and its tributaries might wreak along the states in their path, economist John Michael Riley estimates damages could run up to $4 billion.

SUKKUR, Pakistan (AP) — The deadly, waterborne disease cholera has surfaced in flood-ravaged Pakistan, the U.N. confirmed Saturday, adding to the misery of 20 million people the government says have been made homeless by the disaster. A fresh surge of floodwater swelled the Indus River, threatening previously spared cities and towns in the south.
The crisis has battered Pakistan's economy and undermined its political stability at a time when the United States needs its steadfast cooperation against Islamist extremism. The U.N. has appealed for an initial $460 million to provide relief to Pakistan but has said the country will need billions to rebuild once the floodwaters recede.

News that Russia will load nuclear fuel rods into an Iranian reactor has touched off a countdown to a point of no return, a deadline by which Israel would have to launch an attack on Iran's Bushehr reactor before it becomes effectively "immune" to any assault, says former Bush administration U.N. Ambassador John R. Bolton.
Once the fuel rods are loaded, Bolton told Fox News on Friday afternoon, "it makes it essentially immune from attack by Israel. Because once the rods are in the reactor an attack on the reactor risks spreading radiation in the air, and perhaps into the water of the Persian Gulf."
